What the Local April 3 Primary Candidates Say About Transportation

Below is a list of local candidates who appear on the ballot for the April 3, 2012 Primary Election and their statements on transportation as posted on their websites. Candidate websites for the At-Large Council seat and Wards 2, 4, 7 and 8 seats were viewed. BAC believes that transportation connects each ward and is a factor in creating more vibrant and economically secure communities.

BAC does not endorse candidates, but as a public service we show what they say or do not say about transportation or bicycling in the District on their campaign websites.  The absence of transportation policies on candidate websites does not necessary indicate that they have no opinion on transportation issues.

If you have questions about candidate policies, we encourage you to contact them. Feel free to provide comments below.

Information was gathered from campaign websites, the Board of Elections and Ethics and VoteDC.

(Website) Washington is a city of great neighborhoods. I am committed to a walkable, green, transit-oriented city. I will push to expand Capital Bikeshare, and to expand the city’s system of bike lanes. I will be a champion for the new 37 miles of trolleys / streetcars that will serve all 8 wards. I will work neighborhood by neighborhood to encourage quality development and remove bureaucratic obstacles to neighborhood improvement.

(Website) Several of our main commercial corridors, including 17th and 18th streets, have seen total streetscape renovations, making them more inviting for pedestrians and attractive for our large number of small businesses. After many years of study, historic O and P streets in Georgetown are being reconstructed with the preservation of the old trolley tracks. Supporting and funding our Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) and Main Streets organizations is important in making sure our business areas and Downtown remain safe and clean for residents and tourists alike.

The ability to move through Ward 2 in a variety of ways is important. I have long championed the Circulator bus service as an excellent across-town option. I have also worked hard to bring bike sharing and bike lanes to the Ward, as well as to ensure that pedestrians have safe and easy access to our neighborhoods and commercial corridors. Ward 2 is home to the very first contra-flow bike lane in the District on 15th Street and I will continue to work to bring a strong bicycle and pedestrian infrastructure to every corner of the Ward.
